Branches

Apatity Branch

February 1995 MSTU and Kola Research Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences signed an agreement on creating MSTU Apatity Branch in order to train students in sciences and technical disciplines. After their graduation some students got the opportunity to continue the work in Kola Research Centre institutes. April 1996 Nikolai Kozlov, Doctor of Geology and Russian Academy of Natural Sciences corresponding member was appointed Director of the Apatity Branch, and he continues this work today.

MSTU Apatity Barnch (MSTU AB) is the integration of fundamental science with higher education.

Today MSTU AB includes about 100 teachers from Kola Research Center of Russian Academy of Sciences, with 50% of them having a PhD or a Doctor degree.

Kola Research Center of RAS and the Apatity branch have established 4 departments which are:

  • Department of Chemical Engineering (Head of the Department Vladidmir Kalinnikov, member of RAS, Professor, Kola Research Center Chairman);
  • Department of Geology and Mineral Resources (Head of the Department Felix Mitrofanov, member of RAS, Professor, Director of Kola Research Center Geological institute);
  • Department of Mining (head of the Department Nikolai Melnikov, member of RAS, Professor, Director of Kola Research Center Mining Institute);
  • Department of Geoecology (Head of the Department Vladimir Zhirov, RAS corresponding member, Director of Polar Alpine Botanical Garden and Institute ). A lot of big universities can not boast having such qualified teaching staff.

The Apatity Branch trains students in the following disciplines:

  • Geoecology and Prospecting;
  • Cars and Vehicle Fleet;
  • Enterprise Management;
  • Applied Information Science for Economics;
  • Social Work.

The studies take place in well-equipped laboratories provided by KRC institutes. Apart from this, the students may use the Apatity Branch library as well as Kola Research Centre libraries, visit mineralogical museum and Polar Alpine Botanical Garden and Institute which has various plants taken from different landscape types. The Apatity Branch also has a petrography, mineralogy and biology rooms.

Monchegorsk Branch

MSTU Monchegorsk Branch was started in 2005. Murmansk State Technical University, as well as other educational institutions in our region, is in need of constant development and improvement. Apart from this, the city of Monchegorsk and some nearby cities in this industrial area have been looking for highly skilled engineers during the resent years. These were the reasons for creating MSTU Monchegorsk Branch together with the city of Monchegorsk administration and Kola Mining and Smelting Company.

The students spend their first 2 or 2,5 years in Monchegorsk and after that finish their education either in Murmansk or in the Apatity Branch. The Monchegorsk Branch has professional teaching staff which includes in-house teachers, MSTU leading lecturers and representatives of the city administration and companies. Most of them have academic degrees and big teaching experience. This university branch consists of two departments, namely:

  • Department of Natural Sciences and General Professional Disciplines;
  • Department of Social Studies and Humanities.

The Monchegorsk Branch also has MSTU Distance Learning Institute office which trains students using modern technologies.

The training is carried out in the following disciplines:

  • Industries energy supply;
  • Cars and Vehicle Fleet;
  • Enterprise Management;
  • Applied Information Science for Economics;
  • Social Work.

The Monchegorsk Branch has laboratories to study Physics, General and Inorganic Chemistry, Materials Technology and Construction.

The university library has been modernized; at present it includes more than 13500 items of books, and this number is increasing.

All the students have the opportunity to take their practical training in the town's biggest companies, such as Kola Mining and Smelting Company. The Monchegorsk Branch has established close contacts to create work prospects for the students.

Northern Arctic Federal University held a crash course «English for academic purposes»,organized for the lecturers participating in the «Barents Cross Border University / BCBU» programme.
