Marine Academy

Marine Academy of Murmansk State Technical University was created in 2002. It is a structural subdivision of the University which comprises the oldest maritime faculties. From the moment of its establishment, the first in the world marine higher education institution has successfully trained personnel for the fish industry in the Northern Basin. Keeping the statues of Marine University, MSTU continues to work for the long-run prospects of the economical and social development in the Murmansk region as the country’s largest fishing industry complex, being in the lead among other maritime universities according to the rating of the Russian Federation Fisheries Agency.

Faculty of navigation

The faculty was established in 1950. Navigation officer is the representative of the oldest sea job. During the long years of seafaring history the major responsibility of the navigation officer was to steer the vessels safely from one port to another, and it has not changed. The Navigational Faculty carries out research and educational activities in the following areas: marine navigation and safety at sea, especially with presentation of navigational information, ship route optimization, voyage planning (including the use of the ECDIS/ECS system), especially in the waters described as difficult (restricted) area, navigation safety, route monitoring and international regulations for preventing collisions at sea. Research works are also conducted on the idea of integrated navigational systems (INS, IBS), e-Navigation concept, electronic navigational charts (ENC), voyage data recorder (VDR), a model for performing navigation and astronavigation tasks. The staff is also involved in projects on standardization of navigational terms, acronyms and abbreviations and the analysis of the current needs in maritime education and training (MET).

Marine engineering faculty

The Faculty of Marine Engineering was established in 1950. It comprises two separate departments offering the complete spectrum of study fields ranging from Pre-sea Training to Marine Chief Engineer professional education. The faculty's primary aim is to produce well rounded professional seafarers who have the broad vision and the cutting edge knowledge necessary to meet the dynamism and challenges in operating all types of ships.

  • Department of Ship Electrical Equipment

Faculty of advanced training courses for the fleet officers

The faculty was established in 2000 and affiliated to the Marine Academy.

The Faculty includes:

  • Advanced Training Courses “Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping” (STCW)
  • Marine Training Center of International Safety Management Code
  • Department of Automated Ship Control System Simulators
  • Training and Simulator Center of Global Maritime Distress and Safety System

Training and simulator centers of the Faculty provide cadets and students of the University as well as crew members and management personnel of the Northern Basin marine navigation and fishing companies with the following basic training and vocational retraining programs:

  • General Operator of Global Maritime Distress and Safety System
  • Restricted Operator of Global Maritime Distress and Safety System
  • 2nd class Electrical Engineer
  • Navigational Radar Plotting System
  • Ship Diesel Power Plants Operation
  • Information and Diagnostic Systems
  • Crew Training in accordance with the International Safety Management Code
  • Training senior officers and specialists of navigation companies in accordance with the International Safety Management Code

The Faculty has a well-equipped training base and certified training and simulator centers that meet the requirements of the Russian Federation Maritime Authorities.
