V International Scientific Conference «The Arctic: History and Modernity» was held virtually on April
On April 23-24 Murmansk session of the V International Conference "The Arctic: History and Modernity" was held online at Murmansk State Technical University.
The purpose of the conference was to establish an international interdisciplinary platform for discussing and resolving a wide range of issues related to the Arctic region along with creating a fair view of the Arctic policy of Russia.
Traditionally, the Murmansk session of the conference takes place at the MSTU onsite, but given the COVID-19 restrictions the event was held virtually for the first time. Participants worked via WhatsApp chats.
Scientists and experts discussed topical issues of Arctic development at the following scientific sections:
– Territory planning, construction, logistics, energy and engineering facilities;
– Chemistry, ecology, environmental studies, health and safety;
– water transport and vessel handling, operation and fleet maintenance;
– Arctic biology and bioresources processing.
About 50 papers were presented at the conference from representatives of Russian and foreign educational institutions. 200 master students, PhD students, lecturers, and academic staff took part in the conference in two days.
"As the organizers of the conference, we fostered an open space for participants to feel motivated and comfortable to speak up – albeit in an unusual format and given today's difficult conditions," said the organizer and moderator of the conference, senior officer at Research Office, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Olga Sokolova. – "Conference information support was carried out through the official websites of MSTU and Peter the Great St. Petersburg State University. Of course, these two days of the conference were rough, but we managed. I would like to thank all the participants for their active work at the conference sections and for their interest to our project. "
