Murmansk State Technical University held educational seminar «International Practices in the Sphere of Energy Efficiency and Energy Supply»
On the 24th of May Murmansk State Technical University held an educational seminar "International Practices in the Sphere of Energy Efficiency and Energy Supply" within the Europe Days in the framework of project "Establishing of the EU Center in the Barents Region of Russia" implemented at the financial support of the European Union. Seminar was organized together with Murmansk Regional Center for Demonstration and Education in Energy Efficiency and Energy Supply sphere. The aim of the seminar was to discuss EU energy efficiency targets, strategy, new directives, challenges, EU-Russia energy relations, including international projects in the sphere of renewable energy sources, improvements in energy efficiency and heat and power systems in cities.
Seminar gathered more than 20 participants – professors, post-graduates, researches and representatives of NGO’s and business associations. Executive director of the Murmansk Regional Education and Demonstration Center of Energy Efficiency, Evgeniy Mishchenko, opened the seminar and addressed to participants with words of welcome. "It’s a great pleasure for us to host this event", Evgeniy said, "as the main objectives of the Center are to provide different institutions and general public with the information concerning the implementation of energy saving technologies and programmes in the Murmansk region, Russia and European countries; to raise awareness of the importance of energy saving and efficiency measures; to promote government initiatives in the region.
Participants heard a report on experience of energy efficiency in Finland through city of Rovaniemi example, presented by Vadim Ulanov, representative of Murmansk Regional Agency on Energy Eficiency. The speaker presented the most common ways and energy policy measures taken by Finnish enterprises that allow achieving the improvements in energy efficiency. Arturs Dutka, project manager from Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences, delivered information on ongoing international projects aimed at increasing energy savings, use of renewable energy as well as sharing experiences, strengthening business cooperation and establishing a network which will transfer knowledge, methodology and practical know how of efficient energy usage and renewable energy solutions in the Barents region. After each presentation, there was discussion of the problems and their joint search for solutions. Speakers gladly answered numerous participants’ questions. So experts and participants discussed the following issues: how to provide Murmansk region population with district heating at affordable prices; safety and economic benefits of energy-saving devices; benefits of using energy efficient equipment and implementing energy-saving measures; existing solutions, regulations, rules and standards in the field of energy saving in EU and Russia and others. At the end of the meeting it was agreed that international cooperation and realization of joint projects promoted the exchange of best practices, successful efficiency policies, technological innovations, and new approaches. International cooperation on energy efficiency is a win-win strategy that can deliver benefits to all countries.
Within the seminar participants had an excursion around Murmansk Regional Education and Demonstration Center for Energy Efficiency and Saving, guided by Lyudmila Kiryanova, Vice-director of Center of Data for Science and Technology. The exhibition was divided in five thematic areas: 1. Three "E" – Energy. Efficiency. Ecology; 2. Energy-Efficient Economy; 3. Energy in city; 4. Home energy conservation; 5. Clean energy. Each demonstration area consisted of thematic sections, including display stands, equipped with energy-efficient models of products and materials.
