Marine Academy is Going to Participate in New International Project


17-18 February 2014 the University of Nordland (Bodø, Norway) hosted the kick-off meeting of the international project MARPART "Maritime Preparedness and International Partnership in the High North". Representatives of the Navigation Department of Marine Academy represented MSTU at the meeting. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Rescue Coordination Centre of Norway, Norwegian Coast Guard, heads of police and fire services in northern Norway, representatives of the Global Security Institute, NArFU, as well as representatives of research institutions and oil companies in northern Norway.

The issues of international cooperation development among the Arctic states was considered at the meeting to ensure security and sustainable development of the region in the context of growing economic activity in the Arctic and the increasing interest in its natural resources. The main focus of further project activities is to develop the plan of joint actions of different institutions and organizations of the Arctic countries to prevent and coordinate measures in emergency situations, namely, the development of effective methods of international cooperation in search and rescue operations, oil spills and marine pollution, in ships and offshore structures survival struggle, as well as actions in case of a terrorist threat at sea.

As the result of the meeting the parties involved identified key areas of research and action plan for the next project implementation phase. The next working meeting is scheduled for August 2014 in the city of Arkhangelsk.
