10 June 2021, students of Mesiatsev Murmansk Marine Fishery College and students of Vest-Lofoten College participated in an international online seminar within the joint Russian-Norwegian project "Clean Ocean/Blue Responsibility". The seminar was held at the Murmansk State Technical University.
The first meeting of students of the Murmansk Marine Fishery College with Norwegian experts took place in the fall of 2019. They met representatives of the Fishing Industry Union of the North (Russia), the Norwegian Fishermen Association, and SALT, an independent consulting company with expertise in marine pollution.
Unfortunately, the group's planned trip to the Lofoten in 2021 was canceled given the epidemiological restrictions, so it was decided to hold the meeting as an online event. The workshop took place via the digital platform Microsoft Teams on the 10th of June 2021, with participants from Murmansk State Technical University and Vest-Lofoten College.
Earlier our students cleared the Kola Bay coast of the litter, our Norwegian colleagues did the same in Kirkenes. Participants used "Dypdykk" ("Deep dive") method of registration and analysis of marine litter.
During the workshops participants also knew about programme "Fishing for Litter". They made presentations to identify the main obstacles to waste management as well as they were invited to present solutions to better waste management from fisheries, both at sea and onshore. All of the solutions were interesting and original.
Students acquired important skills and knowledge about preventing pollution of oceans.
They raise awareness of the people on the issue of ocean pollution. We have to show our kids how our consumption behavior affects the level of marine pollution and how we can reduce waste production and consumption in our daily life to mitigate the problem.
