August 2-8 Business Practice in Norway – 2015 was held at the University of Nordland in Bodo
One week Master’s course is an annual meeting for students from Russia and Ukraine at the University of Nordland, Bodø. This time 34 guests from Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Saint-Petersburg and Kiev participated. MSTU was represented by 6 students and Senior Coordnator of International Cooperation Department Elena Moiseenko.
The program schedule was extremely fascinating. Just in 2 days 7 lectures about doing business in Norway were presented to the students, including accounting, development of the region, sustainability, business relations, environmental and social responsibility of business. All lectures were given by English-speaking representatives from the University of Nordland, County Council of Nordland and local enterprises.
Right after having the presentations and working with course compendium the group had a tour around Bodø and surroundings, visited the top floor of the highest building in the city – Scandic Havet hotel, and had a stroll in the city center. Bodo is famous for its beautiful nature – high mountains, lakes and islands. Thanks to good sunny weather the group climbed Keiservarden top which is about 360 meters high.
The program also included a trip around the Nordland region. The group visited Glomfjord Industripark – a place where different Norwegian companies are located and produce fish, minerals, chemicals, solar batteries and various industrial supplies. After having an opportunity to see the companies’ activity from the inside, the group moved to Svartisen glacier – Norway’s second largest glacier which has 60 glacier tongues and covers 370 square kilometres. On the way back to Bodø the students stopped at Saltstraumen tidal – the strongest tidal current in the world.
The next day the group visited Nordland County Council – the City Administration, where students were told about the future plans of city development and the 50 years plan of the airport reconstruction. After that the group was divided in 2 parts and visited 2 different companies: waste-processing factory Iris Salten and Posten Norge – Norwegian Post Company. It was really interesting to find out the difference in organizational process of post services in Russia, Ukraine and Norway.
The last day was about finishing educational part and having both oral and written examination. The whole group of 34 participants was divided into 5 smaller groups, and there were Murmansk, Archangelsk, Saint-Petersburg and 2 Kiev groups. Both oral presentation and paper exam consisted of 2 parts: analysis of a Norwegian enterprise and comparison with a local Russian or Ukrainian company. For this reason it was necessary to have all the team members from one city.
The program was intensive, full of lectures and excursions and was followed by oral and paper examination. Nevertheless, in the evenings participants from different cities of Russia and Ukraine were having really nice time together. The program lasted for 5 days only, but they appeared to be very memorable. Meeting students from different cities and even counties, studying together, having great excursion trips made it possible to say that everyone learned a lot of new things and made a lot of new friends.
