THE KOLA NORTH: PEOPLE AND NATURE

Dates, place Murmansk-Apatity, June, 7-20

Program description. Course is equal to 4 ECTS. The aim of this project is to provide students from Nordic countries with an advanced knowledge in culture, language and environment of the Russian part of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region. The proposed effects are better intercultural understanding between people of the Barents region; multidisciplinary approach in issues of ecology, business, tourism, culture and social sciences; encouraging student's personal initiative in their individual research. This project can significantly contribute to the implementing of Nordic educational standards and techniques into North-West Russia's academic system, strengthen of the Nordic influence in Russian innovative projects in the field of education.

The project is meant for the group of 40 students from the Nordic Countries and adjacent states, majoring in environmental studies, tourism, social sciences, biology, mining, culture and Russian language. It is planned to have an equal number of male and female students in the groups.

Goals. The aim of this project is to provide students from Nordic countries with an advanced knowledge in culture, language and environment of the Russian part of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region.

Involved subjects

1. Kola Peninsula - its nature and environment

This subject involves such lectures as The Kola North - mineral resources; Arctic nature: struggle for surviving in extreme conditions and others, which concern natural resources and environmental problems of the Kola Peninsula. It is a bright survey of nature, ecology and industry of the unique part of Northern Russia, supplemented with excursions to the Alpine Botanical Garden, underground mines and others.

2. Russian language and culture

This subject concerns with history of the Murmansk Region, features of the social and economic policies in Russia, Russian education system and others. It also includes 20 hours of Russian language study for the beginners. Excursions in this part of course include visit to the Murmansk Oceanarium, nuclear icebreaker and other places of interest.

Prerequisites: Undergraduate students.
