MSTU History
In October, 1969, Murmansk High Marine School was renamed into Murmansk Higher Engineering Marine School (MHEMS).
In February, 1992, Murmansk High Marine School was transformed into Murmansk State Academy of Fishing Fleet (MSAFF).
In March, 1996, year Murmansk State Academy of Fishing Fleet was transformed into Murmansk State Technical University (MSTU).
A modern material and technical basis for training the specialists of the fishery fleet was created at MSTU: there are simulators on marine navigation ("NMS-90"), ship's power plants ("DISELSIM") and the Global Marine Distress Satellite System ("GMDSS"). Training the marine staff still takes a leading place in the general structure of training at MSTU.
In 1996 2 specialities of MSTU ("Ship's Electrical Equipment and Automation", "Operation of Ship's Power Plants") has got international accreditation of London Royal Institute of Marine Engineers (Great Britain), that allows the graduates, besides engineering and marine diplomas, also to get a personal copy of the certificate on international accreditation.
With 1992 new faculties, such as: Economics and Management, Finance, Law, Natural and Technical Sciences, have been created and developed actively at MSTU.
Last year the University and the Kola Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (KSC RAS) created Apatity Branch of MSTU on the base of Geological Institute of the KSC RAS, Mining Institute of the KSC RAS, Institute on Industrial Ecology of the North of the KSC RAS, Marine Biological Institute of the KAS RAS, Institute of Chemistry and Technology of rare metals and minerals of the KSC RAS.
